If you're grid-connected, the answer varies depending on the policies of your utility. If you're in an area where electricity is provided by one of TVA's local power company- as we are- you can save money with a self-consumption solar system, which will cover some or even all the power needs of the home or businesses during the daytime, recharging the batteries with any excess, and draw power off the batteries when the sun isn't shining, while leaving enough of a "reserve" to keep the power on in the event of an outage. We believe in battery storage- as solar without it in TN is not the investment it was when TVA paid premiums to sell ALL the power back. When we go to time-of-use rates in the next few years, your Sol-Ark system will be ready- easily reprogrammed to avoid importing power from the grid during high-cost periods, and even recharge the batteries with lost-cost middle of the night power.
